The Iridium Satellite system provides a range of flexible and reliable data services. Using a computer and an Iridium satellite phone, the user can connect to the Internet or a corporate network from virtually anywhere in the world, allowing his / her to:

• Browse the web
• Send and receive e-mail
• Transfer files
• Access corporate networks / LANs

With Iridium World Data Services, the users can configure a computer for two different types of data calls, depending on their needs:

Dial-Up Data

Dial-Up Data Service provides dial-up connectivity through Iridium phone to another computer, a remote LAN (e.g. a corporate network), or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This service offers a typical data rate of 2.4 kbps. The users will be able to use Dial-Up Data service just as they would use the modem on their computer to dial a call through the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The only differences are that the dialed telephone number must conform to the international dialing pattern used by Iridium, and that they will use their Iridium phone as the data modem. In essence, Iridium phone appears as an external modem to a computer. Before using Dial-Up Data, users will need to install the proper Data Modem driver (provided on the Iridium World Data Services CD) on their computer. They will then be able to use standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Dial-Up Networking) to initiate data calls with Dial-Up Data Service.

Direct Internet Data

Direct Internet Data Service provides enhanced Internet connectivity through dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway, allowing users to execute accelerated file transfers and to more efficiently browse the Internet and exchange e-mail. Using this service, users connect directly to the Internet, using their Iridium phone as a data modem. In essence, Iridium phone appears as an external modem to a computer.
Direct Internet Data Service offers faster connection times, improved throughput, and Smart Connect^TM features. Smart Connect^TM assists users in managing their airtime by seamlessly connecting and disconnecting them through the Iridium system when no data is being transferred. This feature, called "spoofing", will reduce airtime charges, improve the phone’s battery life, and allow them to seamlessly reconnect to the Iridium system if their connection is dropped. Airtime charges accumulate only while the call is connected.

RUDICS Connectivity Solution

Router-Based Unrestricted Digital Interworking Connectivity Solution (RUDICS) is an enhanced Gateway termination / origination capability for circuit switched data calls across the Iridium satellite network.

There are four primary benefits of using RUDICS as part of a data solution over conventional PSTN circuit switched data connectivity or mobile-to-mobile data solutions:

• Elimination of analog modem training time
• Increased connection quality, reliability, and maximizing throughput
• Protocol independence
• Both Mobile Originated and Mobile Terminated calls are rated at the same rate

Short Message Service (SMS)

As an Iridium voice subscriber, the Iridium phone performs double-duty as a voice communication and messaging device. The Iridium Satellite phone can send and receive up to 160 alphanumeric characters, in a single message. Once the user turns the phone on and register with the Iridium satellite network, his / her new messages will be sent directly to the handset.

Ship Security Alert System (SSAS)

Many Value Added Manufacturers are now releasing Iridium products that support the new maritime SSAS (Ship Security Alert System) service. Iridium SSAS products typically utilize Iridium's Short Message Service - Mobile Originated (SMS-MO) to transport the SSAS alert messages.
